It is important to remember that dowsing is more of a mental skill, rather than the possession of a physical device itself. Water dowsing rods are the tools that ultimately facilitate the water dowsing process, and will make it easier and easier as you gain dowsing experience.

This may sound a little counterintuitive: a study conducted in 1995 (Journal of Scientific Exploration, Vol. 9, No. I, pp. 1-43, 1995) found that ‘’a few carefully selected dowsers are certainly able to detect faults, fissures and fractures with relative alacrity and surprising accuracy in areas with, say, crystalline or limestone bedrock’’. If you belong to this group of rare dowsers, you may find that water dowsing rods may actually not be the best option for you, and you could achieve the same exact result, but faster, with a water dowsing stick, crystal or pendulum.
What is your budget?
It is always possible to get to expensive and sophisticated pieces of water dowsing equipment. If you are on a budget, however, you could also make your own water rods, by using a piece of flexible plastic, or a piece of grass/wood which can be bent in half and formed into a Y-rod, or if you live near a forest or park, a wooden forked branch could also work well as water dowsing stick.
What water dowsing tool is the best to start with?
Many of the things discussed in this article refer to rudimentary & affordable devices, and they will actually suffice in most cases to provide a working water dowsing tool. Regardless of the tools used, dowsers should learn to use more than one class of dosing tools, to increase their skills, versatility and potential as a dowser. Limiting yourself to one device, or one class of instrument is too constraining for most dowsers.
At the end of the day, every person resonates with different types of dowsing tools. Every water dowsing rods and dowsing device has its strengths and weaknesses. The L-rods for example, work very well in pointing at a water source. So, if your dowsing goal is drilling a well, or finding lost jewelry or coins, the L-rod usually works best.
