The 101 Guide to Finding Water with Sticks

In this article we’ll cover some of the most common questions about forked sticks, willow sticks and some of the most popular witching applications of water finding sticks in the water dowsing process.

What is a forked stick?

A forked stick is an either artificial or natural piece of wood resembling a Y shape. It is believed to dip down to indicate underground water, minerals or oil. Some people also believe that a forked stick can be used as a tool for dowsing – a technique used to find hidden objects or healing.

What type of stick do you need to locate water?

Many people believe that you must use a willow stick at all costs, but this simply isn’t true: virtually any stick can be used to find water, so long as you keep a clear mind and good intentions within your heart. However, the aura of willows is by nature quite strong, so it can facilitate the process if you’re a beginner.

In the next section we’ll cover how to make the best use of a water finding stick:

How do you find water with a willow stick?

In terms of the actual process of finding water with the stick, the dowser (likely you) has to walk back and forth over the area to be tested, looking for any downward movement of the stick. When the dowser finds a source of water, the butt end of the stick will rotate or be attracted downward.

How do you find water with any sticks?

If you can’t find or use a willow stick, or if you’re struggling to focus on the dowsing process, try following these instructions:

  1. Find a quiet place to sit or recline in for 5 minutes.
  2. Close your eyes and focus on your breath.
  3. Inhale deeply and exhale fully, relax your body as you do so.
  4. When your mind begins to wander, gently guide it back to your breath.
  5. Repeat this process until you feel relaxed and calm.
  6. At this point, your dowsing capacity should reach its full potential: go back to the area to be tested for water and start the process.

You will occasionally notice that dowsing for water with sticks can be unsuccessful at times, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t be a successful technique overall.

Sometimes the environment or the placement of the water can make it difficult to find. However, with practice and a good understanding of how to work the sticks, anyone can be successful in finding water.
