A REM pod is a short cylindrical device with a thin aerial sticking out of the top. Put it on a table in a reportedly active room and it will sit quietly until something enters the space around that aerial, then it lights up and sounds an alarm.
It is one of the most popular pieces of kit in modern ghost hunting, and one of the most over-interpreted. Here is how it works, how to use one, and what the readings can and cannot support.
What a REM pod is
The name is usually expanded as “Radiating Electromagnetic Meter” or “Rempod”, and the device was popularised by ghost hunting retailers rather than a research laboratory. It consists of an antenna connected to a proximity and field sensing circuit, with LED indicators and a speaker.
When the electrical environment around the antenna changes, the device responds. That is the entire mechanism.
How it differs from an EMF meter
| EMF meter | REM pod | |
|---|---|---|
| What it senses | Field strength at the sensor | Change near a protruding aerial |
| Typical use | Carried, swept across a room | Placed and left running |
| Output | Numeric reading | Alarm and lights when triggered |
| Best for | Locating and logging fields | Watching one spot continuously |
That difference is why teams often use both. The meter tells you what the room looks like; the pod tells you when one specific spot changes while nobody is touching anything.
How to use one in a session
- Place it deliberately. Middle of a table, clear of walls, sockets and metal furniture.
- Establish a quiet period. Run it for fifteen minutes with everyone still and note whether it triggers. If it goes off constantly you have a placement problem, not activity.
- Keep people and devices back. Phones, radios and even charged clothing can set it off.
- Log every trigger with a time. Note who moved and what else was happening.
- Repeat on another night. A pattern that reproduces is far more interesting than a single event.
Why REM pods trigger when nothing is there
This is the part most videos skip. The antenna responds to changes in the electrical environment, and that environment is full of moving things:
- Draughts moving charged air and dust
- People shifting position or breathing near the aerial
- Nearby electronics changing state
- Static build-up on clothing and carpet
- Temperature and humidity shifts
- Radio frequency interference from phones, WiFi and broadcast
None of that makes the device useless. It makes it a sensor that must be deployed carefully and interpreted conservatively.
A REM pod is a very sensitive “something changed” detector. It is not a ghost detector, and the difference matters when you are trying to work out what you actually recorded.
What to look for when buying
- Adjustable sensitivity. You need to be able to dial it down in electrically noisy rooms.
- Visible and audible output. Lights help on camera; sound helps when you are not looking at it.
- Battery life and connector. Decide whether you want rechargeable or standard cells.
- Weight and stability. It needs to sit still. A pod that rocks will trigger itself.
Prices range widely. Basic units cost a few tens of dollars; the better-known models aimed at investigators run well over a hundred. The extra money buys build quality and sensitivity control rather than a different principle of operation.
REM pods worth considering
This is the expensive end of the hobby. Both of these are the current models investigators actually use.
Frequently asked questions
Does a REM pod detect ghosts?
It detects changes near its aerial. Any connection to paranormal activity is an interpretation layered on top of that measurement.
Are REM pods worth buying?
If you want a stationary sensor that watches one spot while you work elsewhere in the room, yes. If you are starting out, an EMF meter and a recorder will teach you more for less.
Why does mine keep going off?
Almost always placement. Move it away from wiring, windows, metal and people, then re-run a quiet period to re-establish what normal looks like.
